John Ashely Burgoyne
Assistant Professor in Computational Musicology UvA
John Ashley Burgoyne is an assistant professor of computational musicology at the University of Amsterdam and director of the Amsterdam Music Lab. With a background in both musicology and AI, he focuses on the differences and similarities between the musical understanding of humans and computers. He is currently researching new algorithms that can ensure that artists continue to be fairly compensated for the use of their music in generative AI tools. His research involves large-scale experiments and audio corpora, including the McGill Billboard corpus for chord analysis and the Hooked on Music project, which reached hundreds of thousands of participants worldwide to study long-term musical memory. He is also a specialist in measuring musical behaviour, from evaluating difficulty levels for guitar students to analysing the reliability of professional juries at music competitions.
